CREEDMOOR CIVIC TURNS 75...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!

Creedmoor Civic achieves a milestone this year few organizations can boast.  This year we are 75 years old, and over the weekend that you are receiving this newsletter, some 70 of our residents, local pols from the Borough President on down, and neighboring civic leaders will be celebrating this momentous event at the Queens County Farm Museum.  The Queens Chronicle in its June 13th edition will be doing a story about our organization and its current leaders.  (Copies are sometimes available for free at the Bellerose Branch Post Office.)  Our little organization covering a mere 25 square blocks has been a heavy hitter in regard to the Eastern Queens Civic Council, the Federation of Civic Councils of the Borough of Queens, the Queens Civic Congress, the Queens County Farm Museum, and the Joint Bellerose Business
District Development Corporation.

Making Braddock Avenue the District's Business

Some plans are afoot to bring some of the benefits provided by the Joint Bellerose Business District Development Corporation up along Braddock as far as Gettysburg Street. The District has been promised a $200,000 capital grant from State Senator  Frank Padavan which may allow, for the first time, the District to bring banners to Braddock Avenue telephone poles and include some of the proposed  (for Jamaica Avenue) Type M cast iron lampposts at least over the Braddock Avenue Bridge.  Additional plans may include incorporating Braddock Avenue  businesses in the second edition of the Bellerose Business Guide, and soliciting memberships from Braddock Avenue Businesses.  Already, Valley Printing and Engraving is a member.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Summer is coming, and so are the con artists. It seems that every week, we hear about another scam hitting the homeowners of Queens. Whether they're selling home improvements, cable service or a reduction in your electric costs, if you're not comfortable, shut the door. Don't worry about offending them, they're used to it. Too often these scam artists talk their way into your home, and before you realize it, items are missing. Don't become a victim.

Complaints about these new "go-peds", the motorized scooters have been coming in more and more often. According to Captain Bryan of the 105 Precinct, it is perfectly legal to purchase these scooters, but they are not legal to operate on streets within NY State. Police officers responding to a complaint may confiscate these scooters.

Water restrictions are still in effect. Remember, addresses ending in even numbers may water on even dates, and addresses ending in odd numbers may water on odd dates. Watering on those days is only allowed between 7-9 AM, and 7-9 PM. Car washing is prohibited unless using well water.

It's not too late to plan for your block party. The community board requires 65 days to process your application, so get it in early. You'll need slightly more than ½ of the homeowners on the block to sign a petition agreeing to a block party. If your block doesn't have block parties, why not just have a street closing? The cost? $15.00. If you'd like to try this out for your block, give me a call at 464-3369 to get started.

If you haven't already done so, please remit your 2002 dues of $5.00. The response to our dues envelopes has been fantastic, but you don't need the envelope to pay. You can always send your check, or any other correspondence to:

We won't be meeting again after this Monday until September, but our phone line will still be open through the summer. If you're having a problem, give us a call at 464-3369.

Your neighbor,

Rick Duskiewicz

Street Work Causes  Local Blackout

On Saturday, May 10, a dump truck with a raised bucket working on the repaving of Braddock Ave., accidentally caught some utility wires at 239 St. and Braddock Ave. The wires then pulled down two utility poles.

Click for a larger picMost of our area was without electricity for several hours. It was estimated that 1,300 homes were affected. The stores along Braddock were hit hard. While electricity was restored fairly quickly, some of our residents complained that cable TV service remained out for several days.

VIN Etching Scheduled

The Bellerose Commonwealth Civic Association is sponsoring a VIN (vehicle  identification number) etching event at PS 133 on June 15 from 10 AM to 12 Noon.

The 105th Precinct Crime Prevention officers will etch your vehicle ID number on all glass surfaces, making your car less likely to be stolen, since the glass cannot be resold.  The process is quick and does not affect the appearance of your vehicle.  You may be eligible for a lower insurance rate, too.

Best Ford will also be photographing children and distributing fingerprint kits as a service to help ID children if lost.  The kits and photos are kept by the parents.

PS 133 is located at 85th Avenue and 248th Street, Bellerose Manor.  The president of the BCCA, Mrs. Lourdes Hartick, has invited CCA members to participate.
